Hugh Bolton Jones was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Beginning in 1865, he was spending a significant amount of time in New York. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1867 and was a frequent contributor for the remainder of his career. He left for Europe in 1876 and spent the next four years traveling and exhibiting throughout the continent.

Jones returned to New York in 1880 and enjoyed a successful career as a landscape painter. He became a member of the Society of American Artists and was elected an academician at the National Academy of Design in 1883.
