Anton Hohenstein was born in Bavaria and immigrated to the United States in the mid-1850s. He was active in Philadelphia, New York and Hoboken, New Jersey. By 1860, he had changed his name to Anthony Hochstein. Under this name, he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design.
