James Dudley Slay III was born in Jackson, Mississippi. He studied at the New England School of Art and Design in Boston, the Otis Art Instate in Los Angeles and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. 


Slay works in an impressionist style and prefers to paint en plein air. After a long career in California, he now lives in Tennessee. Slay has has exhibited his work internationally.
