Edo period (1615-1868), carved from Japanese Cypress (hinoki) wood, the seated figure in draped robe, originally decorated in pigments and lacquer, head can be removed, hands with holes possibly previously hold something in each, comes together presented with a black lacquer base.

16 1/2 in.

Extensive loss to surface lacquer and pigments exposing wood; stress cracks to wood; possibly held implements that are now lacking; some nicks to surface edges.
