Original blind-stamped black cloth with gilt lettering and design on spine. 8vo; xv, [1], 622, xlii, [2]pp. Inscribed by the author on the half-title: "To / Patsy and Wayne Perry, / with the cordial best wishes / of / John Hope Franklin." With (24) b&w illustrations, preface, contents, list of illustrations, and index. Bookplate on front-paste down along with gift notation to Dr. Patsy Perry, former English professor at North Carolina Central University, with Dr. Perry's name repeated on rear paste-down.

John Hope Franklin (1915-2009) was an historian and professor who held teaching positions at several institutions, including both North Carolina Central University and Duke University in Durham, NC. His From Slavery to Freedom was first published in 1947 and is currently in its 10th edition.

Wear to boards including scuffs, light edgewear, scratches, grime, light discoloration, and small tears and chips to cloth at joints, corners, and spine ends; rubbing to gilt and at head and tail of spine; front gutter cracked at half title with separation from text block starting, scratches and marks at top and bottom edges; pages lightly toned with occasional small mark, stain, pencil line, folded corner, or area of grime, with most leaves crisp and unmarked; numerous leaves/plates with small area of damp staining concentrated at upper corner or margin, one page with small tear at margin. About good/lacking jacket.
