Hardcover. Blue cloth-covered boards, stamped in black and gilt, with patterned endpapers. 8vo; [xx], 481; [2], [xiv], 611pp. Vol. I with frontispiece with tissue guard; original publisher's advertisement for the book laid in loose; vol. II with appendix and index. Both volumes with bookplate/name on paste-downs of Dr. W. Edward Farrison and Dr. Patsy Perry, both former English professors at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Howes W453. (Wear to boards including scuffs, light staining, bubbling to cloth, edgewear, and bumped and rubbed corners, spines lightly sunned and rubbed with wear at ends including chips, tears, and fraying, with larger losses on head of first volume; vol. II sturdy with slight separation from text block, vol. I fragile with significant cracking at hinges and boards loose; writing and light offsetting, stains, and grime on endpapers; frontispiece retains original tissue guard, but detached with tear and significant chipping; vol. I title with edge chipping, small mark, and offsetting, (2) leaves of preface with 1-in. tear, some early leaves loose or partially detached; vol. II with gutter cracking between pgs. 320 and 321 and small area of cracking at rear hinge; interiors of both volumes lightly toned with occasional light grime, underlining/marginalia or mark, but overall interiors are quite clean. Overall fair to good condition.)

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1888. First edition. Hardcover. Tan pictorial cloth-covered boards. 8vo; [4], [ix]-xvi, 353pp., plus 12 pages of ads. With frontispiece with tissue guard and illustrations of medals. With bookplate/name on paste-downs of Dr. W. Edward Farrison and Dr. Patsy Perry, both former English professors at North Carolina Central University in Durham. (Boards worn with discoloration, stains, grime, light soiling, and edgewear, spine browned with grime, rubbing at joints, head and tail rubbed and lightly frayed; top and bottom edges with marks and scratches; overall fragile with some separation from text block, upper board partially detached, repairs or stains from former repairs at hinges, endpapers, and frontispiece, occasional cracking at gutter; scattered light grime or stain, minor foxing spots, and occasional small edge tear or folded corner; interior lightly toned with some underlining/marginalia, but the majority of pages are quite crisp and clean. George Washington Williams (1849-1891) was a politician, historian, and minister. He served in the Union Army as a young teenager and just over two decades later, following his well-known two-volume set, wrote a history of African Americans in the U.S. Civil War.
