Ohio-born artist Philip Edward Mullen studied at the University of Minnesota, where he took with abstract artists Edward Corbett and Peter Busa. A decade later, he received a master’s in Studio Art at the University of North Dakota and an academic doctorate in Comparative Arts from Ohio University in 1970. He began teaching at the University of South Carolina in 1969.

Mullen explored abstract expressionism in the 1980s and 1990s, and over time his style transitioned to featuring architectural elements from historic buildings in Columbia, South Carolina, and figurative elements. Mullen layered images and often reworked old paintings to bring new meaning to them. In 2000, the University of South Carolina named him as distinguished professor emeritus of art. His work is in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Smithsonian Institute, Denver Art Museum, Sonje Museum of Contemporary Art, and museums across the South. In 2020 Mullen received the South Carolina Governor's Award for the Arts for Lifetime Achievement.
