Bryant Chapin is among the best-known of the Fall River School. Born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts, Chapin studied with the founder of the Fall River School, Robert Spear Dunning. While he painted some landscapes and portraits, Chapin is highly regarded for his beautifully detailed still life paintings of fruit.

Chapin’s earlier still life paintings depict fruit, mostly grapes and peaches, artfully arranged atop a polished tabletop or ledge. His mature works, such as the one offered here, present the fruit in a more naturalistic setting. Chapin presents these seven apples as though they have just been picked, showing their varicolored shiny skins to great effect against the orchard ground.
