Kansas-born artist Fern Aspelin studied painting at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, with Birger Sandzén. In 1946 she moved to Akron, Ohio, where she gained prominence as an artist and an educator. She taught at the Akron Art Institute (now the Akron Art Museum) and the Revere School System. Throughout her career, Cole worked in painting, ceramics, and enameling. Through her friendship with Cleveland-based enamelist Mary Ellen McDermott, she became acquainted with the enameling scene fostered by the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her enamel works were featured at the Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition in Wichita, and the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York.
