Stephen Hickman was an award-winning illustrator, sculptor and writer. He was inspired to pursue a career as an artist after attending the 1967 Comic Con in Houston, Texas where he met the famous fantasy illustrators, Frank Frazetta and Roy G. Kernel.

Hickman went on to draw over 300 covers for science fiction and fantasy novels, magazines and comics, including The Brain-Stealers by Murray Leinster (Ace Books, 1977), Savage Sword of Conan the Barbarian (Marvel, 1985), Gryphon by Crawford Killian (Del Rey, 1990), The Man-Kzin Wars created by Larry Niven (Baen Books, 1988), and many more.

Hickman won many accolades and awards over his too short career, including a World Science Fiction Convention's Hugo Award, six Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists and two Spectrum Gold Awards.
