Patricia Shaw (NC, 1942-2023), Two Abstract Ceramic Bowls
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Each a glazed ceramic form created by covering a volleyball in slip covered thin strips of paper which when fired left thin hollow web-like structures, the first with cobalt blue and opaque white glaze, a slightly reticulated form with a raised textured exterior (7 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 10 in.); the second, a reticulated footed basket with white glaze, the foot hand-painted with stains, enamels, and metallics (6 3/4 x 11 x 7 in.); both unsigned.

From the Estate of the late Patricia J. Shaw, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Patricia Shaw spent the bulk of her career practicing as a lawyer. Eventually, she left her career to turn to sculpture and created thereafter. Shaw said "Most people are submerging rather than emerging, yet here I am struggling like a youngster on the threshold of a new career. I am particularly interested in the human face and the human mind behind it. Representations and/or references to these almost always appear in my work."

"My work is sometimes surrealistic or even fantastic. Other times, it is very straightforward and almost literal as to what it is trying to convey. At times, the meaning has been expressed unconsciously and even I can not be sure of the exact meaning of the piece."

Each in good estate condition.
