Hasui started the drawing of this print on May 14th, 1957, however before the first impressions were published he passed away on November 27th, 1957. Being the last work of Hasui, the first impressions were distributed to Hasui's friends and acquaintances at the memorial service on the hundredth day after his death. This composition depicted a lonely monk climbing the stairs to the temple on a snowy day. Hasui may have chosen this scene knowing death was approaching, the rigidness of snowy winter is associated with death in Japanese aesthetic and Konjiki Hall is known for its funeral services. However, the serenity of the snow, the beauty of nature, and neutral hue of the picture may reflect Hasui's inner peace.

Very good color, impression and condition; not examined outside of the frame.
