Daniel Rhodes studied at the University of Chicago, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Colorado Springs Art Center, the New York State College of Ceramics, and Alfred University. He began his career studying painting with Grant Wood. He transitioned to working with clay while at the Colorado Springs Art Center. In 1964, he developed a method for building and firing large sculptures by incorporating fiberglass cloth in the clay body of the work. During the 1980s his sculptures focused on the torso and head. His works are in the collections of the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, New York; the Oakland Museum of California Art, Oakland, California; the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Santa Cruz, California; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; and others.
