Lot Details & Additional Photographs
PLUGGED, AU DETAILS.
Private Virginia Collection Several types of commemorative medals were issued during the 17th and 18th centuries to commemorate the Peace of Westphalia, which marked the end of the historic "Thirty Years War" between the cities of Osnabrück and Münster. The medal offered herein appears to be either one of two, or the only one known to have been sold and offered to the public. An auction catalogue published by Thomas, M. & Sons in 1855 featured one of these medals, which was owned by J.W. Kline, of Philadelphia. In this catalogue, this medal type is lot #1319, titled "Centennial Anniversary Medal, in commemoration of the Peace (signing) of Westphalia." The publication can be accessed through internet archives by clicking on this link: https://archive.org/stream/catalogueofexten00thom/catalogueofexten00thom_djvu.txt
The present medal is possibly the same one sold from Kline's collection in 1855, with no other examples of past sales existing in the public sphere according to our research.
