After college, Fumero moved to North Carolina where he designed jacquard upholstery fabrics for cars and airplanes.

In 1956, Fumero met Herb Cohen, a potter and sculptor in Hickory, North Carolina. The couple eventually settled in Blowing Rock in 1972 and committed themselves to producing art full time.
