German States, Ulm. Spanish Siege of 1704, Gulden/Guldentaler. KM# 90.
Private Virginia Collection This attractive gulden from the city of Ulm was minted by the Spaniards following the Spanish War of Succession in 1704. This coin appears to be rather unique as well, sporting two features not present on others of this type: Perfectly squared corners (not rounded), and a reeded border along the squared edge that encompasses the other circular reeded border. This could be because of its place during the striking process, a variety, or a potential unknown type of this date. Additionally, the coin is not oriented on a square axis, but rather on a diamond axis, again differing from most known examples.
It has been authenticated by NGC but was not encapsulated due to the presence of residue (likely PVC) from the previous owner's storage of the coin. Attached with this coin is the recommendation for NCS Conservation to remove the residue and allow the coin to be encapsulated and graded, should you choose to do so.
