Howard Gaskill was born and raised in Stacy, North Carolina on the inland side of Core Sound. Like so many before him, Howard became a waterman and made a living catching fish, crabbing, trapping, hunting, and doing odd jobs. His sister Suzie married decoy making icon, Mitchell Fulcher. Howard died at the early age of thirty and left his decoy stand to brother Calvin Gaskill (1893-1974), the head being made of black gum root.
