Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Portsmouth Island, before 1900, carved and painted wood, iron bill, published on page 108 of Shorebird Decoys of North Carolina by Kroghie Andresen and Philip Harvey.

Length 12 in.

From the Personal Collection of Mr. Kroghie Andresen, Charlotte, North Carolina

Collected by historian John Reiger on Portsmouth Island in the 1950s. Reportedly, Reiger found ten shorebird decoys in an old abandoned house on the island while he was doing research for his college thesis.

The maker is unidentified but the lines and general appearance of this decoy from Portsmouth Island is stunning. It is extremely well made and in a running posture.

Original paint worn to bare wood in places, corrosion to iron bill. Photography stand does not convey.
