Frederic Crist is a contemporary blacksmith and sculptor living in Charlottesville, Virginia with a studio in Waynesboro. Fred earned a BFA in sculpture Philadelphia College of Art (presently University of the Arts) in 1974, and began working at Samuel Yellin Metalworkers in Philadelphia in 1977. Notable influences on his work include Freddie Habbermann, Serge Marchal, as well as Robert Motherwell, Alberto Giacometti, Franz Kline and Frank Stella and Eduardo Chillida.

While at the Yellin studios, he assisted and led on many major projects, including gate and railing for the Washington Cathedral in DC; a display case for the Book of Kells at the University of Pittsburgh; and restoration and new reproduction of forgings at the Wilmington Train Station in Wilmington, Delaware.

Crist has completed numerous commissions for private and corporate entities. In 1999-2000, He received a Virginia Museum Fellowship in Sculpture, a Craftsmanship Award from the Virginia and West Virginia Chapters of the AIA for works in forged metals. His work has exhibited in many notable venues such as the Reynolda Gallery in Richmond, Virginia; the Franz Bader Gallery in Washington, DC; Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, Virginia; American University Art Museum, Washington, DC; Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, DC; and the Historical Society in Washington, DC.

Most recently the artist held an exhibition of sculpture and photographs at the McGuffey Art Center, Charlottesville, Virginia, in November 2023.
