Yongzheng period (1723-35), circa 1735, porcelain dish hand painted to the center with a large and complex coat-of-arms in gilt, colored enamels and silvering supported by a bluish-gray and a sepia and gilt lion, the crest shown twice on the rim between finely drawn flowering boughs in blue enamel, grisaille and gilt.

Private Collection, Virginia Beach, Virginia Collected by the consignor and her husband with the guidance of David Sanctuary Howard, who literally wrote the book on Chinese Armorial porcelain. The couple began collecting during the 1970s from galleries and auction houses across Europe and the United States, and even from Howard himself. This collection is a very special offering of some rare and wonderful pieces collected over a lifetime with great care and passion.

Made for James Sandilands, 7th Baron of Torphichen and descendant of Sir Archibald Douglas, Regent of Scotland, who married Lady Jean Hume, daughter of the first Earl of Marchmont.
