"I am a self-taught artist, and what appeals to me about outdoor painting is the opportunity to create quick, uncomplicated images of places about which I have strong feelings." Such places include areas of North Carolina, the Atlantic Coast, and the Low Country. Hessler has studied with American artists Tim Bell, John Poon, and Larry Moore. He is a member of the Salmagundi Club of New York, the American Society of Marine Artists, the North Carolina Plein Air Painters, the U. K. Plein Air Society, and the Blacksburg Regional Artists Association.
