A Japanese Cast Stone Temple Spirit House Lantern

Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century, a well proportioned hand carved temple "Oribe" style lantern , the light chamber at top has a reticulated sun and crescent moon on either side, above is a square slanted roof with rounded finial, on the lower part of the stand is a Sanskrit inscription and below a carved alcove with sculpture of the Buddha or Jizo, raised on a square base.

A rare early “Oribe” granite stone lantern. This is a classic style first observed in about the 17th century by tea master, Oribe. He was a leading 17th century Japanese tea master and designed this iconic lantern style especially for private tea gardens.

Good estate condition; very nice patina as expected with wear from being outside and age.
