Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Ocracoke, North Carolina, circa 1910, carved and painted cork, wood bill, loosely mounted to drift wood, published on page 122 of Mattamuskeet and Ocracoke Waterfowl Heritage by Jack Dudley.

Length 12.5 in.

From the Personal Collection of Dr. Jack Dudley

Wahab left Ocracoke in 1916 on the DuPont yacht, Tec, as a mate. He traveled to Wilmington, Delaware and enrolled in business college. He became a self-made businessman. He moved back to Ocracoke permanently in 1948 and operated several businesses on the island. He purchased the Quork Hammock Club and entertained many friends there. He carved a few decoys and collected many made by other carvers. This yellowlegs decoy is made of cork with a wooded bill splined through the back of the head. It was reportedly owned by sporting author and playwright, Rex Beach and later used at the Quork Hammock Club by Stanley Wahab.

Original paint with moderate gunning wear, damage to the tail, bill is loose.
