Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1830s, iron oxide glaze, having a slightly rounded lip, pulled grooved handle, singled line at the upper shoulder with the incised leaf and pendant motif below a three petal flower, not signed. The pendant is partially obscured by fly ash.
11 3/4 in.
Reference: THE WEBSTER SCHOOL OF FOLK POTTERS, pages 26-28 for similar leaf and pendant drawings. According to Mark Hewitt, potters may have intentionally arranged pots in the kiln so that the front would receive any kiln drips, in the manner of an artist's mark.
Good condition but for a small base rim shallow chip.
