20th century, ink on paper, hanging scroll format, a large imposing painting with expressive brush strokes of Shoki, inscribed to the lower right hand side together with a red artist's seal, wooden rollers. with inscribed tomobako wooden storage box.

DOA 81 1/2 x 33 3/8 in., Image size 54 x 27 1/4 in.

Shoki is the Japanese adaptation of Zhong Kui, a historical figure from China's Tang dynasty (618-907), who was integrated into Japanese folklore as Shoki the Demon Queller. Shoki became a prominent subject in sculptures, paintings, and woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) from the eighteenth to the late nineteenth century.
