Hans Canon was the pseudonym of Austrian artist Johann Baptist Strašiřipka. In 1845, Canon briefly enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, before studying privately under Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Carl Rahl. From 1847 to 1855 he served as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army. After his service had ended, he traveled widely in Europe and the Middle East. In 1874, his paintings gained recognition at the Vienna World's Fair. Afterward, he received commissions to portray the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition and went on to specialize in portrait painting of aristocrats.

The canvas has been lined, with a repaired hole to the forehead and associated retouching, age cracking, and additional retouching visible under UV light, repairs and re-gilding to the frame.
