Sigismund de Ivanowski was born to a Polish family in 1874 in Odessa, a city that was then part of Russia and is now in Ukraine. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, where he caught the attention of Czar Nicholas II and served as his court painter for a brief period. He also studied in London under James Abbott McNeil Whistler before emigrating to the United States in 1902.

In the United States, Ivanowski became a sought-after portrait artist, capturing the likenesses of prominent figures of his time including Teddy Roosevelt and Ignacy Jan Paderewski. He also contributed to various magazines and books as an illustrator, becoming a member of the Society of Illustrators.
