Although born in Massachusetts, Walter Whitcomb Thompson grew up in Palatka, Florida near St. Augustine. He studied at the University of Florida and at the New School of Design in Boston under J. J. Enneking.

After a few years in New York, Thompson eventually settled in Beaufort, South Carolina. He served as director of art education for the public schools between 1934 and 1939. He is also listed as a co-founder of the Beaufort Art Colony and affiliated with an art colony in Brevard, North Carolina.

Thompson was a member of the American Artists Professional League, Carolina Art Association, Georgia Art Association, North Shore Art Association, Savannah, GA Arts Club, and Sumter, South Carolina Art Association. He exhibited at Gibbes Art Gallery, Charleston, South Carolina; Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina; North Shore Art Association, Gloucester, Massachusetts; Telfair Academy of Art, Savannah, Georgia; as well as in prominent New York City galleries such as Ainslie, Milch, and Macbeth Galleries.
