Oil on canvas (lined), 1882, signed and dated at lower right, presented in a period ornated giltwood frame with a gallery plaque affixed at lower center.

Born in Wolverhampton, England, Hill immigrated to the United States with his family in 1844, settling in Taunton, Massachusettes. His art career was spent mainly in Boston and the New Hampshire towns of Lancaster, Littlejohn, and Nashua, though he frequently made trips to paint throughout the American West.

He shared a studio with his brother Thomas Hill (1829-1908) in San Francisco and painted many landscapes of California. During the early 1920s, he maintained a studio in Los Angeles and later worked in Hood River Oregon from 1911 until his death in 1923. His works have been exhibited by the San Francisco Art Association and the Boston Art Club, among others.

The painting has a wax lining, a few areas of retouching visible under UV light inspection, and light age cracking.
