Boston Oct 22.1789 / My Dear Sir- In consequence of your letter dated at Hartford 123th inst - I have engaged Mr Ingersoll's house; at the corner of Court & Tremont streets for the President of the United States, during the time he shall honor the town of Boston with his presence - in this house there are three parlours on the lower - three bed chambers on the second - and sufficient on the third to accommodate servants. In the neighborhood is a very good livery stable; the owner of which I have not been able to see this evening, but will engage this , or another in the morning, and if I have not the pleasure of seeing you before your arrival in Boston, you shall hear by a line left at Ingersoll's of accommodations for your horses by a line left at Ingersoll's, but as judge Lowell and myself intend doing ourselves the honor of paying our respects to the President of the U.S.at his morning staye of Saturday. I hope the pleasure of mentioning to you this in person. From the Collection of the Lyman Family, Massachusetts Tobias Lear of New Hampshire (1762-1816) served George Washington as an adviser, an aide, and a fixer between 1784 and Washington's death in 1799. Here, Lear received this letter from Christopher Gore regarding arrangements during an upcoming Presidential visit to Boston. A really splendid piece of American history.
Overall creme age toning; modern 9-1/4 in. tape reinforcement along the edge above the sender's address; two splits on address panel edge; area of minor loss from breaking the seal to open; overall a well-preserved sheet and quite legible. Very good condition.
