The original painting by Raphael was commissioned in 1512 by Pope Julius II for the church of San Sisto, Piacenza. In 1754, the painting was acquired by August III, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, for the Gemädegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
