Sixth-Plate Post Mortem Image of a Young Woman

Here a daguerreotype shows its subject lying in state before burial, possibly American Indian or African American, some 150 years later, we can only speculate on the nature of this lady's untimely death. Curiously, the date "24. 5. 56" is penciled on the paper lining the back panel of the case.
