Edmond Fitzgerald was born in Seattle and graduated from the California School of Fine Arts, studying under Lee Randolph. Fitzgerald was part of the U.S. Geological Survey Expedition to Alaska and returned annually for the next ten years. He was a peer of artists Eustace Ziegler, Eric Johanson, and Chauncey Ryder. He was active for 26 years in the United States Naval Reserve and served during World War II, having artistic and combat assignments throughout his service.

He moved to New York by 1940 and settled there after the war, joining the Salmagundi Club and exhibiting at Grand Central Galleries. Fitzgerald taught at the Newark Academy of Art, Parson's School of Design, and the New York Academy of Design. He was president of the Allied Artists of America and the American Watercolor Society, for whom he became the first Honorary President and a regular exhibition juror. He was also a member of The Artist's Fellowship and the National Society of Mural Painters.
