Ca. 1864, photo on carte de visite (CDV) mount featuring a three-quarter length portrait of Ulysses S. Grant in uniform with the (3) stars indicating his rank of lieutenant general, signed in pencil along lower edge, "U.S. Grant, Lt. Gen. U.S.A," with imprint of "Whipple, / 96 Washington Street, / Boston" and information about photo negatives on verso.

From a Significant Boston Silver Collector Ulysses S. Grant rose to the rank of lieutenant general and was appointed General-in-Chief in March 1864. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant just over a year later in April 1865.
John Adams Whipple (1822-1891) was an important Massachusetts photographer known for his daguerreotypes and night photographs, including early images of the moon and stars.
Good estate condition with mild scuffing and scratching to photo, light toning, and one corner slightly bumped; verso with a few small marks and spots, and writing in ink at upper edge.
