Gert Berliner was a Jewish and German-born photojournalist and filmmaker. He escaped the Holocaust and was separated from his parents when fleeing Nazi Germany in 1939 at age 14, an experience that shaped his perspective on human suffering and resilience. In Berliner's photography, he focuses on documenting social issues and the human condition, emphasizing the importance of memory, justice, and strength against adversity.
In addition to his works being present in many significant collections and museum publications, the small stuffed monkey Berliner took with him when fleeing Nazi, Germany and kept for many years now resides in the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
