Born in Brooklyn, New York, Shikler studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and later with Hans Hofmann, developing a style that blended traditional portraiture with a contemporary sensibility. He is perhaps best known for his iconic posthumous portrait of President John F. Kennedy, which captures a contemplative and solemn Kennedy with his eyes cast downward, now displayed in the White House. Shikler also painted official portraits of First Ladies Jacqueline Kennedy and Nancy Reagan, as well as other notable figures, including writer William Styron and actress Katharine Hepburn. His work is celebrated for its refined technique, psychological depth, and ability to capture the essence of his subjects, securing his legacy as one of the most prominent portrait artists of the 20th century.
Some chipping and flaking to frame; not examined out of the frame.
