Circa 1950, maple, including a three drawer chest (30 x 42 x 16 in.); a two drawer nightstand (22.5 x 18 x 18 in.); and a full size bed with wood hook-rails, on casters (headboard 33.5 x 56 in.), unmarked.
Included is a copy of a letter documenting this set made by Gregory Ivy.
In 1931 Ivy received his M.A. from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. He majored in painting and minored in design. From 1932 to 1935, he taught at Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, PA (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania) before accepting a position in 1935 as head of the art department at Woman’s College in Greensboro, NC where he was instrumental in founding and developing the art department and establishing The Weatherspoon Art Gallery.
While at Woman’s College, Gregory Ivy helped start the MFA program, which until 1950 was the only art department in North Carolina to have both MFA and BFA degrees. Ivy also introduced the first industrial design class in the United States for college women. He was president of the Southeastern College Art Conference (now SECAC), and appointed director of the Burnsville School of Fine Arts in 1952.
Gregory Ivy's work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, State Art Gallery in Raleigh, the Mint Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
