Sara Lichtenstein was the daughter of a sculptor from Warsaw, Poland. After surviving the Holocaust, Lichtenstein came to the United States in the latter part of the 1940s, where she graduated magna cum laude from Hunter College. Lichtenstein pursued her master's degree at NYU and received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of London. She became a scholar of nineteenth-century romantic painting and an assistant professor of art at Duke University in 1974.
