Joyce Watkins King is an independent artist and designer living in Raleigh, NC. She works in textiles, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and art installation. King holds an MFA in Visual Art from UNC-Greensboro, a BA from the College of Design at NC State, and an MS in Textiles also from NC State. She also held positions in the arts, university development, and publications at NC State for over 15 years and several Raleigh-area nonprofits. She has taken many classes at Penland School and served as a teaching assistant. Since 2014, she has had nine solo exhibitions and work included in more than 20 group exhibitions.

Her work has been shown at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, the Weatherspoon Museum in Greensboro, the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum in Blowing Rock, the Martin Marietta Center Gallery in Raleigh, CAM-Raleigh, the International World of Threads Exhibition in Toronto, Canada, and twice at Fiberart International in Pittsburgh. In the past, her work has been shown at Lee Hansley Gallery, Flanders Gallery, City Gallery, and Gallery C in Raleigh as well as galleries in Rocky Mount, High Point, and Durham, NC; also in Richmond, St. Louis, Denver, Los Angeles, Charleston, Houston, and Atlanta. Her work is included in corporate and institutional collections including the James B. Hunt Jr.
Library at NC State University; Grubb Ventures; Rex Hospital Cancer Center; Habitat for Humanity; and Capital Associated Industries—all in Raleigh or Cary, NC; and Friendly Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC, as well as many private collections. Public Art Projects have included commissions from the City of Raleigh including bus panels, a bus shelter, historical banners, and Sir Wolfter Raleigh, a red wolf sculpture for the NC Museum of History.

Joyce is a Fellow of the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Amherst, VA where she has had three residences, the Hambidge Center in Georgia, and held residencies in Vermont,
New York, and North Carolina. She has received six NC Regional Artists Grants from the NC Arts Council and was recognized as a Kathryn H. Wallace Awardee for Artists in
Community Service from the Triangle Community Foundation. King received the 2022 Guest Juror Award from Surface Design Magazine for her body of work titled Fast Fashion Fiasco for the annual International Exhibition in Print issue. In addition to having worked in many exhibition catalogs, she was a featured artist in, The Art of Connection and How Art Heals: Exploring your Deep Feelings using Collage, both by Andra F. Stanton, published in 2021 by Schiffer Publishing.
