Private Collection of North Carolina Coin Silver Born in Scotland in 1803, John Campbell settled in Fayetteville, North Carolina sometime prior to 1818, where he apprenticed with John Selph. He became a member of the Selph and Campbell firm from 1827-1829, and worked independently and in other partnerships thereafter, locations including: Cheraw, South Carolina (c. 1835); Nashville, Tennessee (1836-1855); and in Montgomery, Alabama (1855-1860). Although quite capable as a silversmith, recent scholarship indicates that Campbell was also very active in the retail trade.
