Born in Scotland in 1803, John Campbell settled in Fayetteville, North Carolina sometime prior to 1818, where he apprenticed with John Selph. He became a member of the Selph and Campbell firm from 1827-1829, and worked independently and in other partnerships thereafter, locations including: Cheraw, South Carolina (c. 1835); Nashville, Tennessee (1836-1855); and in Montgomery, Alabama (1855-1860). Although quite capable as a silversmith, recent scholarship indicates that Campbell was also very active in the retail trade.
