The Model 1847 U.S. Artillery Musketoon, produced by Springfield Armory, was developed to meet the needs of mounted troops during the mid-19th century. Designed to be a shorter and more manageable alternative to the standard infantry muskets, the musketoon featured a 24-inch barrel, making it easier to handle on horseback.
Chambered for the .69 caliber, it was intended for use with the Minie ball, a conical projectile that enhanced accuracy and lethality. The musketoon was primarily issued to artillery units and some cavalry regiments during the Mexican-American War and the early years of the American Civil War.
Overall good estate condition, barrel and lock have surface scratches, oxidation and pitting, rear band barrel is slightly loose, stock has field marks from age and use with repairs at barrel pins, buttplate has some oxidation.
