Oil on canvas, signed with monogram and dated "86" or "06" to upper left corner, stenciled "ESK" to verso, presented in an ornate giltwood frame with gallery plaque affixed at lower center.

Stretcher size 18 x 14 in.; Frame dimensions 24 1/2 x 20 1/2 in.

Hubert von Herkomer was a prominent member of the Royal Academy, Royal Water-Colour Society, and the Royal Engravers. He left Bavaria for Southampton in 1857, and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Hertfordshire from 1883 to 1904, and was the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894.

The ESK stencil en verso of the work may indicate this was exhibited at the South Kensington Museum school.
