18th century or earlier, the first in brass with ribbed sides alternating with registers of shell motifs, presented with a period pestle (mortar 3 1/4 x 4 5/8 in. dia.; pestle 7 1/4 in.); the second in turned wood, probably lignum vitae (mortar 4 3/4 x 3 3/4 in.; 4 3/8 in. pestle).
