The first is a carved Melon vase (10 1/2 in.) signed and dated 2001, the second is a double gourd form with a narrow spout, signed and dated 1997 (13 in.).

A type of Japanese pottery that first appeared in the sixteenth century. It is stoneware recognized by its freely-applied glaze as well as its dramatic visual departure from the typical monochrome glazes of the period.
