Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Mid-19th century, stamped "L.MILES" below the collar and strongly attributed to Dave the Potter, the ovoid storage jar has a glossy olive alkaline glaze, with two applied lug handles, the double collar rim with tooling at the base and inner ledge, are features known to have been used by Dave. The lower inch of the jar has what appear to be finger imprints. Two delicately drawn vertical lines and three punctates on the shoulder indicate capacity.
13 x 9 1/2 in.
Private Collection Punctates along with slash lines were a known characteristic of Dave's work. For additional studies on the signage of Dave the Potter, please refer to: "Chipstone Ceramics in America 2006" and "More than Meets the Eye", Sept. 13, 2019, published by William & Mary College.
Some expected wear to the inner ledge rim; glaze filled firing line at attachment point of one handle; quartz inclusions and quartz pops. A tight hairline runs the circumference of the jar about 1 inch above the base rim.
