The Estate of the late Dr. Larry Southworth, Fredericksburg, Virginia

Born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, John Adams Elder was a painter of landscapes, portraits, and historical vignettes. Elder studied in New York City and Dusseldorf, Germany under Emanuel Leutz. He returned to the United States in 1856 and exhibited at the Richmond Mechanic Insitute. He moved back to Fredericksburg in 1860 and enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862. After the war, Elder worked in Fredericksburg and Richmond, painting some of the area's most prominent men and women. He passed away from an illness in 1895 and was buried in a Confederate Cemetery in Fredericksburg.

In 2007, a retrospective of Elder’s work was shown at the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center titled John Adams Elder: Fredericksburg’s Artist of the Civil War, including pieces on loan from the State Art Collection of the Commonwealth of Virginia and other private sources.

Flaking and instability to the paint in the lower margin, age cracking, and scattered retouching.
