Born in Almeria, Spain, Xavier Gonzalez immigrated to the United States as a young man. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City, in Paris, and in the Far East. He was a teacher at Tulane University, the Brooklyn Museum, the Sul Ross State Teachers College, Case Western Reserve University, and at the Newcomb Memorial School of Art in New Orleans.
Gonzalez's works have been widely exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He was a member of the National Academy of Design.
Gonzalez was working in Provincetown, Massachusetts around 1947. This is likely a harbor view of Provincetown or New England.
