William Brewster Hoyt is a noted American artist celebrated for his realistic paintings that capture the essence of everyday life in New England. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Hoyt was raised on the campus of St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island. His mother, Kitty, a portrait painter, and his father, Norris, a sailor, writer, and photographer, were his first artistic influencers.
Hoyt graduated from Yale University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. After serving in the U.S. Navy, where he was recognized for his artistic abilities, he pursued a professional painting career spanning over five decades. His work encompasses marine scenes, landscapes, and intimate domestic still lifes, all characterized by a keen observation of light and detail.
