Gen Paul was a French painter and lithographer celebrated for his energetic depictions of Parisian life, musicians, and landscapes. Born in Montmartre, Paris, Paul grew up surrounded by the vibrant bohemian culture that would later become central to his art. Initially training as a decorator, his artistic career took a turn after he lost his right leg during World War I. Undeterred by his injury, Paul began painting, developing a dynamic, expressionistic style influenced by Cubism, Fauvism, and the Old Masters. His works are characterized by bold brushwork and vivid movement, often evoking the rhythm of the bustling Montmartre streets or the music he adored.
Throughout his career, Paul exhibited alongside prominent artists of his time, including at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. Despite achieving recognition, he remained deeply tied to his Montmartre roots, where he befriended artists such as Utrillo, Vlaminck, and Modigliani. His works evolved to reflect a unique synthesis of emotional intensity and technical innovation, making him one of the pioneers of the post-Impressionist and modern expressionist movements in France. Today, his paintings and lithographs continue to be celebrated for their spirited portrayal of life and their contribution to 20th-century art.
