Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek was born into the illustrious Koekkoek family of painters,. He was the third son of Hermanus Koekkoek Sr., under whose guidance he received his initial artistic training. Koekkoek made his debut at the Exhibition of Living Masters in 1859, with his early works reflecting his father's influence. In 1864, he relocated to Hilversum, where he came under the influence of the Laren School and later adopted stylistic elements from the Hague School.
